Vads Corner

Dr Muruga Vadivale · Kuala Lumpur · Online since 12 October 1995

One of Malaysia's first medical websites. What began as a page of links became, over thirty years, a set of resource pages built during outbreaks as they happened — several of them the first of their kind anywhere — alongside a monthly column and, since 2026, a blog.

Some of these pages have been at the same address since 1997. That is rarer than being first, and harder.

Pages are dated by when they first went up, not when they were last touched. Where no date is shown I no longer have a reliable record of one. Where a page is a historical record rather than a current resource, it says so.

Current writing

Kerbside Consult NEW

Longer pieces on medicine, public health and health policy — fully referenced, and corrected in public. Successor to the Cybermed column. No fixed schedule; roughly monthly when the work is worth doing.

Outbreaks and diseases

Most of these were built during the outbreak they describe. FIRST means I can evidence the claim. EARLY means I believe it was the first of its kind but cannot prove it at this distance — if you know otherwise, I would be glad to be corrected. What is not in doubt is the dating: every page below has been at the address shown since the date shown.

The guestbooks

Vads Corner has had a guestbook since November 1995, and some of the most useful things on this site arrived through it. The haze page exists because readers asked for one. Six books survive and are worth a browse — they record the 1997 haze as it happened, and later the Japanese encephalitis, Nipah, enterovirus and West Nile outbreaks, written by people who were living through them.

Nov 1995 – Jul 1997 · Sep – Nov 1997 · Jul 1998 – Dec 1999 · 2001 · 2001 – 2002 · Earlier book · Old guest list · Outbreak guestbook

Those pages carry readers' email addresses in plain text, as was normal at the time. They are left as written. The Yahoo guestbook that once accepted new entries closed with GeoCities in 2009; until a replacement is in place, please write to me by email instead.

Suggestions and corrections are welcome, and always have been. If a link here is dead, or a page needs updating, or there is something I have missed, please send me a note.
